Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Assalaamu`alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakatuhu

Since Sr. Kaltham will be out of town for this weekend, she & I have agreed that I will go ahead and post the initial details of the new Seats of Scholars program so we do not lose this initial time.

The following posts will describe, one-per-post, the following details:
  • Format of the classes
  • Schedule of the classes
  • Miscellanous details

Format of the classes

Postby Abu Hurayrah » Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:52 pm

There are many ways in which a class such as SoS can be conducted, and the format agreed upon by Sr. Kaltham & myself is as follows.

The first classes will be conducted entirely online at the beginning. This is to ensure the greatest availability to those that will be participating. Those of you familiar with PalTalk will immediately understand how everything works. The following instructions are for those that are not already familiar wtih PalTalk.

The courses will be conducted through software known as TeamTalk (It can be found at http://www.bearware.dk). TeamTalk is similar to PalTalk in that it allows group-chatting much like MSN, Yahoo!, and AOL messengers, except that it also allows voice-chatting. This is the most important reason.

In addition, the TeamTalk server is not going through PalTalk, but rather, it is already setup-&-running on the Columbus Dawah webserver.

To get started, follow these instructions:

Download & install the TeamTalk software from this link:
http://www.bearware.dk/teamtalk/v3.1.1/ ... _Setup.exe
(TeamTalk does not install any Spyware or 3rd-party software. It is a "clean" program, and it is also free to download & use).

I will post detailed instructions on the configuration & setup once it is started, in shaa Allaah.

The classes themselves will be formatted as follows:

I will play the entire lesson (approximately 1 hour) online through the TeamTalk program. Students are welcome to text-chat with each other as the program is going on. After the lesson has finished, we will quickly review the lecture, attempt to answer any questions, and so on. The review time will last approximately 1/2 an hour.

I will follow-up with more concrete details after I get home from work, in shaa Allaah.

Schedule of the classes

Postby Abu Hurayrah » Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:56 pm

The schedule of the classes will be the following:

Lessons 1 & 2: March 22nd (Wednesday)
Lessons 3 & 4: March 23rd (Thursday)
Lessons 5 & 6: March 24th (Friday)
Final review session: March 25th (Saturday)
Exam: March 26th (Sunday)

A study guide will be provided for each lesson, including the topics that are covered, in shaa Allaah.

The timing for each will be 9PM in the evening. Please post your availability if you cannot make each time. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours per evening for the classes - this should allow enough time for the lesson as well as the review session.

Edit: Time changed from 8PM to 9PM

timing

Postby UmmHamzah » Fri Mar 17, 2006 9:57 pm

waalaikumsalam

Abu Hurayrah, the masjid prays isya at 8:10 /8:15 by next week insyaallah. This is also too early for me as I will be busy getting the kids to bed at 8-8:30.
I wonder if you can make it later, like 9 pm?

I realized that after I posted the time. However, I'm afraid if we hold it later, then it will be too late by the time we conclude the lesson + study session (e.g., 11PM).

If this is not really a problem for most people, then I'm willing to go with the jamaa`a on this, because it's not terribly late for me (is that a good thing or a bad thing?)

Would 9PM be an accessible time for everyone?

I think 9:00 is better than 8:00, wallahu a3lam, I don't mind it to be late,

Can we have the finalized details soon insyaallah? It's already Monday. I'm assuming the lecture notes will be provided online? I would like to forward the details to some people so we can plan accordingly. Last minute plans are not good. :)

Jazakum Allah khair.

Wa `alaykumussalaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakatuhu

The finalized time IS 9:00 PM. I apologize for not getting the word out sooner. The notes will be available, at least for the first lesson, by tonight. Check the main page.

Details for this event will also be e-mailed out to the Columbus Dawah mailing list tonight as well. Make sure you're on the list, if you're not already. Also, spread the word amongst your family, relatives, & friends.

Joining the mailing list is as easy as send an e-mail to "announce-subscribe@columbusdawah.com".

Class Details

Postby Abu Hurayrah » Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:18 pm

The first class we will be having is Usool ul-Hadeeth by Sh. Abu `Ammaar Yasir Qadhi.

If you would like copies of the lecture itself, they can be downloaded from the following links:

http://www.audioislam.com/audio/sunnah/ ... art_01.mp3
http://www.audioislam.com/audio/sunnah/ ... art_02.mp3
http://www.audioislam.com/audio/sunnah/ ... art_03.mp3

http://www.audioislam.com/audio/sunnah/ ... art_05.mp3
http://www.audioislam.com/audio/sunnah/ ... art_06.mp3

You do not need to download the files for yourself, because we will be broadcasting them for everyone to listen, in shaa Allaah. Just make sure you've installed the TeamTalk software (see the first posts above). Instructions on how to install the software will follow shortly tonight.

I will also be posting the study guide later tonight, in shaa Allaah. I will compile everything into one post, to make it easier for everyone, in shaa Allaah.

If anyone is confused, please post a message here asking for clarification. I will also remind everyone that it is expected that there will be some roadblocks, as it is the first time we're trying to do something like this. So, please be patient and make du`aa' for its success.

I didn't get any emails last night. Is Abu Hurayrah alright? Or did I just miss out on the email?

Jazaaki Allaahu Khayan. I'm just fine. I sent out the announcement e-mail a short while ago (just before 9AM).

The study guide for the first lesson will be distributed prior to the class, in shaa Allaah.
